Safely Transporting Your Generator

Generators are vital tools, both for backup power in case of a blackout and for remote worksites without other access to power. But before you can use yours, you need to get it to the proper location safely!

We here at Howell's Marine Sales & Service want to help you get the power you need where you need it, so we’ve put together some tips for safely transporting your generator, below. Before Moving It

Manufacturer Recommendations

Step one is to look in the owner’s manual to see if your generator needs any special care before it can be safely moved. There may be steps that we don’t cover in this general guide, or maybe there are steps we do cover that your specific model doesn’t need. It’s always best to check first!

Cool Down

If the generator has been used recently, wait for it to fully cool off before you try to move it. Wait at least twenty minutes to ensure it’s cool enough to move.

Inspection

Finally, verify that the fuel valve is off to keep it from entering the crankcase and diluting during transportation. Do a visual sweep to make sure the generator still looks undamaged.

Moving the Generator

Use the Handholds

When you get to moving it, make sure to use the handholds built into the casing. They’re specially reinforced to help you move the machine without damaging any components. They also help indicate which side needs to remain up at all times, since a turned generator can get damaged and spill fuel.

Secure It

If you’re hauling the generator with a vehicle, it’s vital that you properly secure it in place in the truck bed or trailer in question. If you don’t, the generator can tip and bounce around, causing expensive damage to both the generator and the vehicle carrying it.

First, make sure it’s loaded upright, then tie it down with bungee cords, ratchet straps, or other tie-downs. Verify that any wheels on the generator are locked in place, and never place anything on top of the generator casing.

Safe Driving

When you drive with the generator, do your best to maintain an even speed and take turns and merges slowly. This will keep fluids from sloshing around and potentially spilling and will help the generator remain in place. Leave plenty of space between you and other drivers for maximum reaction time.

Prepare For Spills

Plan ahead for spills, even when you’re as careful as possible to prevent them. Pack a spill kit including:

  • Gloves.
  • Funnels for moving fuel.
  • Absorbent materials for soaking up spills.
